Tewkesbury Historical Society was founded in 1991 with the intention of providing meetings for the public and stimulating research about the town of Tewkesbury and district. Meetings of the Historical Society are held each month from September to May when talks are given, primarily on Tewkesbury topics, although subjects of a wider historical nature are also included. Various events such as tours of historical sites also take place from time to time. See the Meetings & Events links for full information. The Society publishes an annual Bulletin where members and guest writers disseminate their research, the Publications link gives further details. The author of the best article each year receives the Woodard Award. Articles published in Bulletins have also been nominated for, and two have won, the Gloucestershire county Bryan Jerrard Award. Bulletin articles have also won the national British Association of Local History Award. The Society has created The Woodard Database, an ever growing resource of Tewkesbury related data. A major undertaking of the Society is the creation, in the database, of an index of the local newspaper, The Tewkesbury Register. |
