Tewkesbury Historical Society AGM 2006
Minutes of the Annual General Meeting of the Society held on 27 April 2006 at the Tewkesbury Methodist Church Hall.Present, the President (John Dixon) together with about 35 members and guests.
Apologies for absence were received from June and Ken Flude, Janet Devereux, Edward and John Crowther and Miss Norah Day.
Minutes. The minutes of the Annual General Meeting held on 21 April 2005 were taken as read and were approved and signed as a correct record.
The President gave his report on the past years activities of the Society using the Power Point Projector, which had been purchased thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
He referred to the sad death of the Society’s Honorary Treasurer, Bill Camp. Bill had been a stalwart member of the Society from its early days and had served several terms as Treasurer. The Society had been represented at his funeral.
The President paid tribute to the members of the Committee of the Society, all of whom worked very hard in ensuring that the members were able to enjoy a season of interesting talks. The President was disappointed that no new members had offered their services to help with the work of the Society. It was essential that younger enthusiastic members come forward to help with the work, especially the financial duties and to co-ordinate the Oral History Project.
Thanks were expressed to those members who assisted in the distribution of publicity and preparation of the Bulletin.
Life Members. On behalf of the Committee, the President proposed that in recognition of the contribution that David Willavoys had made to the Society over many years, he be granted the Life Membership of the Society.
The proposal was duly seconded and was carried unanimously.
Publications. In addition to the Bulletin, the Society had published a booklet which paid tribute to the men of Tewkesbury and several adjoining parishes, who had died in the service of their country during World War II. This project had been assisted by the receipt of finance from the Home Front Recall Fund of the National Lottery. To enable the Society to improve its outreach into the community, financial help came from the same source to purchase the Power Point Projector. The President thanked those Society members who had contributed freely of their time and expertise to make this publication a success.
Website. The Society website was being used by people throughout the world to contact the Society to give or obtain information. In the past year the website was "hit" on 2653 occasions.
The President concluded his report by thanking David Willavoys for once again standing in as Minute Secretary at the AGM, in the absence of June Flude who was on holiday.
Treasurer’s Report. The newly appointed Treasurer, Nigel Druce, presented his report on the finances of the Society. He described the Society as being "Rich in Assets, but poor in cash". He reported that the Society had made a loss in the year of Ł482.30 mainly due to the poor sales of Bulletin 15. He was greatly concerned that the losses of the past years would take some time to be recouped and in the meantime, the Society would not be able to finance another Bulletin.
The Treasurer reported that the accounts had been audited and found to be correct by Mr Hallett. Having stated that he was willing to be re-appointed, he was thereupon elected by the Society.
Election of Committee. The following members having signified that they would be prepared to continue, were re-elected to form the Committee;-
John Dixon Cliff Burd
June Flude Ken Flude
Audrey Pound David Willavoys
Nigel Druce
Bob Woodard Research Award. The President welcomed Mr David Evans and Mr John Loosley to the meeting and invited them to announce the winner of the award for the best article published in the 2005 Society Bulletin.
Mr Evans praised the standard of the research in many of the articles which made the judges task difficult. In the view of the judges, the award should be made to Derek Round for his contribution entitled "Tewkesbury Pioneer in Transport". Mr Evans presented the Trophy and Medallion to Mr Round.
Bulletin. A brief discussion took place over the future publications of the Society Bulletin. The cost of production was a deterrent to sales of the Bulletin. Suggestions were made for a smaller and cheaper publication and it was agreed that the Committee carry out a review of the present method and alternative methods.
Date of next AGM - It was agreed to fix the date of 26 April 2007 for the next AGM.
The meeting closed at 8.30 p.m.
