Tewkesbury Historical Society AGM 2007
Minutes of the Annual General Meeting of the Society held on 26 April 2007 at the Tewkesbury Methodist Church Hall.
Present, the President (John Dixon) together with about 36 members and guests.
Apologies for absence were received Nora Day, Janet Devereux, Sam Eedle, Richard & Eileen Hart, Alan & Wendy Snarey.
Minutes. The minutes of the Annual General Meeting held on 27 April 2006 were taken as read and were approved and signed as a correct record.
Proposed by David Willavoys and Seconded by Cliff Burd.
The President gave his report on the past years activities of the Society using the Power Point Projector.
Congratulations were given to Richard Sermon who won the Brian Woodard Award last October for his report on the "Jew of Tewkesbury".
The President thought that there has been too much of him during the year as he was holding four positions. This year there was one resignation from the Committee but two younger members had come forward to join after the announcement earlier this year that if no new committee members were forthcoming the Society would fold.
John was also disappointed that the May visit to Chipping Camden couldn’t take place because of lack of support.
The President paid tribute to the members of the Committee of the Society, all of who worked very hard in ensuring that the members were able to enjoy a season of interesting talks. On her resignation June Flude was presented with an engraving for her work with the committee.
Thanks were expressed to those members who assisted in the distribution of publicity and preparation of the Bulletin.
A big thank you was given to David Willavoys for organising the indexing of the Tewkesbury Register. The Tewkesbury Registers were moved to the Records Office in Gloucester with help from C Burd and his sons. The area where the Registers were kept was needed for the siting of a disabled toilet and the records were removed to a damp cellar, Gordon Baker was presented with a copy of an article on Army life 1740.
Publications.
Stocks of Bulletins 1-4, P1 Harry and P2 Doddo are now empty and they are replaced as when copies are required.
We have 300 copies of anthologies and thus we are left with unsellable amounts of bulletins. These will trickle down each year as Messrs Allisons is a place where we can sell back numbers but it is unlikely that we will sell our stock in a decade. It is clear that the retail price for Bulletins 14-15 is too high despite their prize wining qualities.
The other outlets only manage to sell more populist booklets and the most recent copies of bulletins as soon as they are published.
It would seem sensible, therefore, to ask the committee to sell off copies of Bulletins 5-15 cheaply to try and reduce the stock to c30 of each for future trickle stock.
John Dixon had produced two History Briefing Documents, one on the Crescent and one on Spring Gardens.
Bulletin 16 will be produced by digital format and will be available for around £5. Intended publication date early autumn.
Website.
The Society website was being used by people throughout the world to contact the Society to give or obtain information. In the past year the website was "hit" on 2653 occasions.
John was pleased to announce that Derek Benson had taken over the management of the website and would be upgrading these as and when.
The President concluded his report by thanking David Willavoys for once again standing in as Minute Secretary at the AGM, in the absence of June Flude who was on holiday.
Secretary’s Report.
June and Wendy Snarey attended a Local History Meeting at GRO and it was interesting to hear that other Societies are active but also suffering from lack of committee members and a shortage of younger members.
Treasurer’s Report.
John, Acting Treasurer, reported that the accounts were in a much better condition that they were last September: there was a credit balance of £1,688.93 compared with £174.46p in 2005-6, bearing in mind that no bulletin has been published in the past financial year. This had been helped by Alison’s and W M Smith’s outlets selling copies of our bulletins and settling their invoices.
Acceptance of Accounts proposed by K Flude and Seconded by Cliff Day
The Treasurer reported that the accounts had been audited and found to be correct by Mr Hallett. Having stated that he was willing to be re-appointed, he was thereupon elected by the Society.
Proposed Audrey Pound and Seconded David Willavoys
Election of Committee. The following members having signified that they would be prepared to continue, were re-elected to form the Committee;-
John Dixon Cliff Burd
Janet Martin Ken Flude
Audrey Pound David Willavoys
Sue Norman
Proposed Bill Rennison and Seconded Cliff Day
Programme.
Thanks were given to Audrey Pound for arranging the speakers throughout the year with most of the programme for 2007/08 nearly completed.
Bob Woodard Research Award. The President welcomed Mr David Evans and Mr John Loosley to the meeting and invited them to announce the winner of the award for the best article published in the 2006 Society Bulletin.
Mr Looseley and Mr Evans praised the standard of the research in many of the articles which made the judges task difficult. The award was made to John Dixon for his contribution entitled Tewkesbury’s Obsession with Nelson?. Mr Evans presented the Trophy and Medallion to Mr Dixon.
Date of next AGM - It was agreed to fix the date of 24 April 2008.
There being no other business, the meeting closed at 8.33 pm.
