The Floods and THS
I was on holiday when the floods struck and was also lucky enough not to be flooded. I know some of our members have been afflicted and to them I send our best wishes for recovery. It will take a long time and so if we can rally round in any way and help individuals then please do. E.g. Ken Flude has offered help with electrical issues
So far I know of the following members affected:
Bill Rennison
Steve Tandy
Roger Butwell
Bob and Beryl Sayers
There must be more so would you let me know their names so I can contact them. Email John.
The following message has been received from Bob Sallis regarding Bob & Beryl Sayers' experiences during the floods.
..... On the night of July 20th Bob & Beryl were evacuated and stopped the night in the site owner bungalow the following day they were billeted at the council offices and then bussed down the down to the Forrest of Dean. Their accommodation was a school / leisure centre where they stayed for several nights until some very good friends came to their rescue with an offer to go and stay with them at Roberts End Farm Long Green near Bushley. After the floods had receded Bob returned to the site to salvage some of their belonging which are now stored in my garage. Bob's caravan was deemed to be a right off by the Insurers, but the good news is he had a "New for Old" policy and his van will be replaced with a brand new shinny one. His new van should be sited and ready for him to move into when he returns next year. ....
The Society has also suffered the loss of all its stock of bulletins which were kindly looked after for us by Fleet Graphics, the firm founded by Janet Devereux’ husband. This is the subject of an insurance claim and we shall have to copy the bulletins digitally and then print as we need them. Again if any of our members have had businesses affected then please let me know.
It would also be a valuable exercise to collect photographs of the floods so, if you have any, would you email them as an attachment to the Webmaster Derek Benson or let me have paper copies. In particular we would appreciate photos of land before it was built upon. I am thinking, in particular, of the Morrison’s site and Wheatpieces. Links to such photographs, videos and other flood related information can be found on the left.
The Big Historical Question is whether the 2007 floods superseded the former benchmark of 1947: (click on images to enlarge).
