Although it is now our quiet season, there is some important news to impart to you!
Wendy Snarey
Wendy is, of course, our Secretary but she is also well known as a superb transcriber of data. She is also a superb researcher and, during her trips to the PRO in London accompanying Alan on his business trips, she discovered - and transcribed - for us an invaluable archive which she called "Lloyd George's Domesday Book".
After the introduction of Old Age Pensions in 1908 and other social reforms, whilst at the same time needing to build new 'Dreadnought' battleships, Lloyd George needed to raise taxes and the method he chose was to revert to a land tax, beloved of William the Conqueror. In the short term, it provoked a political crisis which led to the loss of power by the House of Lords but, in the long term, historians are eternally grateful to Lloyd George and Wendy for the survey which revealed the extent of property ownership in the country. Thus every property in Tewkesbury is marked on the 1883 OS map with a reference number. Vital statistics were recorded: ownership, occupation, a detailed description, rental, gross value and where known the previous selling price etc.
It is of immense value to local and family historians and our Society is deeply grateful to Wendy for making it available to us. Since it was written up in Bulletin 11, other localities will be able to catch us up now that the B.A.L.H. has justly recognised Wendy's work!
Wendy, however, has always been reluctant to write articles based upon her research. She has, however, promised to follow up the transcribing of various documents which have highlighted the so-called corruption of the 1880 election which led to the unseating of our M.P.. We look forward immensely to reading that in Bulletin 14, 2005!
Congratulations Wendy on a wholly justified award!
August Visit
Since our last meeting we have been offered the Opportunity to team up again with Chris Kirby, lately our esteemed museum curator, who is also a teacher at Oxford University. He has offered to take us round the Ashmoleon Museum on Saturday, 7 August 2004 after which we would be free to spend the afternoon enjoying the delights of Oxford. We propose to travel in groups by private car and the cost of the Museum visit would be a mere £2 per head. If you would like to go and require more details, would you contact Cliff on 294648 or email him from here. Please be sure to let Cliff know if you would be willing to offer any insured places in your car or if you would like to be driven by someone else.
Weekly Computer Sessions in the Town Library.
These will continue during the summer but there will be a break from 15-29 July inclusive but they will resume in August. Please telephone the library to check in advance.
The next committee meeting takes place on Thursday 9 th September at 7 p.m. at 1 Milne Pastures after which Searchlight 5 will be published; whilst the first meeting of the 14th Season takes place on 23 September featuring Margaret of Anjou, fascinating leader of the losing side at the Battle of Tewkesbury.
We look forward to seeing you then and
wish you a sunny and peaceful summer break.
John
